Thief 2 is the only game that has come even close to replicating the feeling I had dumpster diving after dark. It gives you the exact same type of butterflies in your stomach and the same elation when the job goes off without a hitch.
I can easily say it’s the best stealth game ever made and the runner-up is so far behind that you need a microscope to see it.
Thief 2 is still my favorite game of all time. There’s nothing else like it.
Nothing else gives the same satisfaction of planning out a route for a bank heist or infiltrating Soulforge and then pulling it off without getting detected.
Throw in the total immersion from the haunting ambient music and lore that you discover by reading notes and eavesdropping and nothing else has come close. Not even dishonored, which I also enjoyed. Thief is the most immersive I’ve game I’ve ever played.
I remember playing shipping and receiving for hours and unlocking all the different storage containers and realising that it was just one level Meanwhile all the foreshadowing
The fascinating thing to be reminded of by seeing this video so many years later is that this cycle will repeat over and over again. “Thing I liked years ago is better than thing people like today,” says essayist. Some of it was, but it came at a cost, so we then valued other things in response to those costs/flaws.
There just aren’t that many first person stealth games, and none of them have topped thief. There was dishonored but it wasn’t a pure stealth game. Same with Prey. It’s simply a unique game that only came into existence by accident late in the dev process.
No one would risk creating a first person stealth game these days without inserting a lot of combat options that thief didn’t have.
Gloomwood is the only close spiritual successor, but its been in early access for a long time (though it does still get substantial updates).
