Cynically though… they’ve been peddling nothing for two decades now. Big data, the cloud, SAAS, web 3.0, metaverse, nfts, llms, there’s always a new nothing born.

Most of the ‘‘smart money’’ is just in it for the short term. Get all the value possible out of their position and be the first out. The bagholders will be the same wallets with legs, us, who hold all that shit in our pension funds, IRAs and whatever.

We are very much in a post sustainability mindset when it comes to the investment market. Enshitification is just scrapping the bottom of the barrel to keep the numbers good for another quarter.

They are all going into debt over datacenters. Google issued new shares… how? why? They all make so much money and still they can’t cashflow this expansion.

I played it when standalone came out. I enjoyed the feeling it gave you of walking out alone in the woods, orienting yourself on landmarks and stuff. Mostly avoided players and did my thing though lol

Farming equipment is a particularly annoying one, that and construction vehicles, are becoming increasingly locked down by proprietary software and impossible to maintain yourself. You can’t even employ mechanics outside the dealer network in some instances and it will be more so in the future.

Not sure if you got your answer yet, but Windows 11 should be off the table. I don’t believe your CPU supports it at all. Therefore you get Windows 10, which is off security updates. If you must use your laptop and Linux is off the table, run Windows 10 (or even 7) offline.

Keeping it off the internet and just for your resource intensive tasks is your best bet.

Otherwise, install Linux on it to use it as a remote desktop and rent a VPS to run your stuff on it. It’ll run whatever latest distro you want and your laptop will stay cool as the VPS will do all the computing. That subscription can be very cheap, free even with some providers.

Don’t run windows 10 online. Same advice for outdated MacOS versions.

A pro trick for optimizing Windows is to look at all your startup tasks and prevent ANYTHING from booting when you reboot your system that isnt strictly necessary. Running it offline will also let you purge a ton of processes and applications that take up RAM idling in cache.

I’m actually really surprised this didn’t work. They had acquired such a large amount of quality studios, IPs and a huge back catalogue. They had enough money to keep the subscription low indefinitely. Getting added to the Game Pass was a huge deal for indie devs at one point, but I think those who did were disapointed with returns.

Granted the article says they dropped 300 million on Jedi Survivor and Suicide Squad… which gets to the point of how unsustainable subscription models are. It’s like a smaller version of the Ai market. Just like how you can’t break even on 300 million selling a $10 a month subscription, you can’t break even on $30 billion investments with the same $10 subscription.

It’s more of a symbolic thing. FreeBSD has removed the vast majority of gpl code over the last decades. I think this specific removal was just a last lingering overlap that was difficult to replace.

Is it bad? It’s subjective. The project goals were always to be permissive. There was just historical borrowing from other open source projects.

I think both approaches are valid. GPL has fostered a greater number of maintainers and volunteer participants. That’s definitely its shown strength but you can also attribute fragmentation to this. Whereas BSD has created much more focused and targeted distributions. I guess that’s indirectly due to the license and more the smaller group of active contributors.

It’s really difficult to rival FreeBSD at certain specific usecases. I wouldn’t use anything else for a NAS or a router.

It’s a very lopsided distro, bad gpu and wifi support. Limited application support. Really not ideal for a desktop, nor is it really meant to be used that way.
