It’s telling that CONCACAF’s rationale for being against it was because they weren’t consulted first… not because they didn’t like the plan, just that they didn’t know about it ahead of time.

He’s a pervert for wanting to be with an attractive 45 year old woman? Shit, I guess I’m a pervert.
What is the line where he goes from pervert to normal person? He’s fully abiding by the “Half Plus 7” rule.

This is the real answer. Republicans don’t give a shit that he’s a drunken asshole, or that he’s a moron doing stupid stuff like removing vaccine requirements among the soldiers, or that he’s destroying military leadership. They care that they might lose elections and need to blame a non-elected person.

A) The priest does not believe it condemns them to eternal damnation. They know they will get excommunicated, but that does not mean they will go to hell. They can repent and be forgiven and go to heaven, just not eat a wafer at church. They can even still go to Catholic mass! They just can’t eat the wafer. That’s the entirety of their punishment, as long as they repent of their sin. If they are fighting so hard to protect child molesters because they don’t want to get kicked out of church, then clearly they would repent being forced to follow the law instead of following their god’s law.
B) This is allowing very real torture of a child because an adult has a hypothetical belief. In your analogy of a schizophrenic, you complain about “You’re basically locking someone up for the crime of being mentally ill.” Turn that around to be the more correct analogy: You’re basically condemning a child to sexual abuse and a lifetime of mental torture because you didn’t want to lock up a mentally ill person. Being mentally ill is not a crime. Acting out something that harms another person IS a crime. Yeah, maybe priests don’t get sent to prison, but maybe they get sent to a mental health facility where they can talk about why their god cares more about protecting pedophiles instead of innocent children.
C) I don’t know if the priest would have to give that disclaimer. That isn’t settled law anywhere. Also, in your hypothetical, the confessing person is religious and believes that if they don’t confess this sin they will go to hell. So their choice is between going to hell for eternity or telling a priest who will report them to the police, who may or may not be able to get a conviction depending on the evidence. If a person is religious enough to be confessing pedophilia, that person will believe that eternal damnation is worse than 20 years in prison.

That’s the great thing about percentage-based profit margins.

Our society has prioritized a priest’s desire to remain part of the Catholic church over the very real torture of children. This doesn’t prevent a priest from going to heaven, just from being part of the church. As long as the priest repents at the end of his life, he’ll still go to heaven.
Now, where it gets tricky is if the priest doesn’t actually repent. Then he is choosing between his belief in a hypothetical god and his hypothetical eternal soul… and the very real torture of children. If he, again hypothetically, believes he did the right thing and doesn’t repent, then his soul will be damned… hypothetically.
If the only real lasting punishment for a priest is if they do not repent, then the people who support this KNOW that they SHOULD report it and that they would NOT repent doing it. They just don’t care.

The key difference is that lawyers and psychologists have a duty to report if they believe the person is likely to commit a future crime, depending on the severity of the crime.
This is protecting a priest from a duty to report even violent crimes that lawyers and doctors would be required to report, simply because some people believe that the priests would be excluded from heaven for reporting.
EDIT: It doesn’t even prevent priests from going to heaven, only excommunicates them from the church. They could still repent and go to heaven.

OK, do it. Everyone complicit with what that fucker did should be in prison, including Trump and Clinton and Gates. Hell, throw the corpse of Stephen Hawking in prison while you’re at it.
Right. Homeowners didn’t lose money, they lost equity. Flippers lost money.
