  • I’m trying to build my own Wayland WM. why when there are so many out there? because I don’t feel like any of them do them well. either they all focus on fancy animations (hyprland) or slam you with features without focusing on specific things (mangowm) or primarily have issues with mouse/keyboard focus on games in window mode or just games in general when you toggle away from them and back (all of them) and that annoys me.

There’s one specific game I play in window mode with multiple clients of the game running, it’s EVE Online. ALL the Wayland WM’s have issues with this. you move away from the window and back it doesn’t grab the mouse back the first time or the keyboard won’t work the first time going back. X11 WMs have ZERO issues with this. but like with Niri you have to switch workspaces and back just for it to grab the mouse/keyboard again. Hyprland you have to switch windows and back. Sway is the same type of deal.

So I’m trying to build a Wayland WM with a focus on gaming and vim style navigation as that’s what I do on my machines. game and code. I just want to take a suckless type approach and do one thing and one thing well. I’m also tired of the idiotic configs and resource hogs of many of these. there’s an x11 WM called SXWM written by a 13 year old whose config file is the most simple and clean one I’ve ever seen. many x11 WMs are like this (CTWM is another example of a clean and simple config) I want to adapt that to Wayland as hyprlands switch to lua and thus turning it into a mess also annoyed me.

it’s a big project but one that I feel needs to be done. so I’m just building something that tiles, is solid with the mouse and keyboard, and has a very simple config and low resources. that’s it.

  • they really are horrible laptops, especially the ROG ones. Those things on day one you turn it on are like “alright, time to start killing myself”. you can keep all the fans constantly clean, repaste them every few months, and they’ll still cook themselves alive. and the AC adapter will die on you faster than the laptop itself. I had to replace the AC adapter on mine 3 times in 2 years.

Friends don’t let friends buy Asus laptops.

  • When I was a kid there was a discount store in a strip mall by my house that would sell these shareware floppys for like $2 a pop. So i’d pick up Doom, Wolfenstien, etc for cheap. I imagine many peple did the same.

Also keep in mind that the Doom Shareware floppy had like the entire first episode on it and eventually if you managed to get on a decent internet connection or knew someone who had the rest of the game you could copy that to your shareware version.

Also id games were notoriously easy to pirate. I mean hell Quake 3 Arena for example all you needed was to find pak0 and you were pretty much off to the races. Today it’s one of the easiest games to “pirate” on linux. I have the damn pak files on a codeberg repo.

  • extremely low hanging fruit. I travel a lot for work and all my laptops have VPNs with encrypted DNS. Even had to set that up on one of my FreeBSD installs (which was a god damn pain and with the shit wifi on that there really wasn’t much of a point at the end of the day).

it’s even more mandatory for places that have NO captive portals. Those connections are opening themselves up to a can of worms. Looking at you Union Station in Toronto Canada. seriously, fix your shit. One of the biggest transit hubs in all of Canada and their wifi is completely 100% open.

  • same. I really liked playing it but like you it never really hooked me in to finish playing it. The mechanics are great but the story is sort of meh.

The game mechanics though are a lot of fun. like navel combat in space. There was another online game a few years ago which was the same, Dreadnaughts. THAT game was awesome but it just never could maintain a playerbase. It had the same gameplay style except it had settings that were both in space and in the atmosphere of planets.

  • Zuck has never had an original idea in his head, ever. His initial claim to fame, prior to FB, at least on college campus’ was making a “hot or not” clone utilizing photos from various Harvard facebooks. Every idea since then has been someone elses or he’s tried to take the Apple approach of “let someone else do it first, then we improve on it” except he has never been able to nail down the second part. The only reason FB became successful was the initial exclusivity and it filled the gap of a post 20-something myspace/ICQ/AOL IM world.

  • it’s as though Reddit is actively encouraging it’s user base and potential new users to not use the site. The search results encourage that. “here’s the answer from reddit, don’t worry, you don’t need to go there” or “you prefer old.reddit? welp you gotta sign up for that now!” or the search field that just doesn’t search the actual subreddit you’re in “you want to search for a specific window manager on unixporn? nope, here’s a result from a subreddit about cleaning windows”

Also watch your tongue on reddit! if you criticize ANYTHING that reddit has vested interest in you get a ban.

The site should be studied as a textbook example of enshitification

  • honestly wasn’t worth it. in the 90s you either had enough money to get one of those dual VHS recorders or you had two VHS players that you somehow wired up to each other to do it. you still had to pay for the blank tapes so I mean you’d rent a tape for like $3 but you’d be spending more just to have a copy of it. In many cases it was just cheaper to either record from a tv broadcast or just wait for the rental place to take the product off the shelf and sell it used.

and even when DVD-Rs came out that was still expensive. The blank discs weren’t cheap and the drive itself was expensive. Add to the fact that burned DVDs just don’t last anywhere near as long as pressed DVDs. I thought I was smart burning Dreamcast games but I’d end up having to reburn them every couple years. THEN consider the fact that many people just simply didn’t know how to burn DVDs correctly so good luck getting one to play on everyones player perfectly.

  • If you’re a Millennial I highly suggest the “Emily is Away” trilogy.

3 games that are extremely simple, but god damn do they make you feel like a teen/20 something again.

The first game, “Emily is Away” takes place in AOL IM. it’s a visual novel but it’s very good and allows you to set your avatar, etc just like you did with AOL IM. it’s brutal when it gets to the end. the Second game “Emily is Away Too” also takes place in AOL IM but is a bit more difficult as this time there are timing choicse. the third game “Emily is Away <3” takes place on the original Facebook IM. that one is even more difficult. so the difficulty between the games ramps up.

fantastic series. I have all three and I love them. honestly the first game made me cry at the end.
